Content Editing

It is important for all writers to have standard editing skills. As a technical communication expert, it also is important to know how to share revision in a way that is helpful. Content editing can enhance a piece of work and is an integral part of the writing process.

This is a representation of correct editing techniques, specifically with copymarking. Knowing how to markup text accurately is a valuable skill, something every writer should use when revising written communication.

An editor can provide accurate, correct, and simple feedback in the most effective ways when they are aware of the authors intentional meaning of their work. This requires constant communication about the project and the authors desired outcomes.

The copymarking step of editing is focused on making marks to improve grammar and structure. This can be done both physically and electronically. I used Microsoft Onenote and Word to edit electronically by using features like the pen tool, highlighting, and commenting.

A technical document should be appealing. The comprehensive editing process is a creative endeavor, seeking to make text stand out and easier to read.

I can improve the user experience by focusing on the document design, typography, spacing, and story structure.

Part of the process entails changing the order of the content to better fit the narrative told, making the overall document flow better.

The edits to the provided piece helped it flow better and improved scanablity so future readers can find helpful information quickly.

In this piece, the skills learned from copyediting and comprehensive editing were applied to an actual piece of work being run through the publication process. Microsoft Word was used to electronically edit for both aspects of the process.

Through simple editing strategies, both parties were able to communicate about the recommended changes and how it would affect the author's work.

By collaborating with the author, it was interesting to learn how other people work and what they prefer in their writing. By applying the principles of comprehensive and copymark editing, her work was elevated, and the experience was a great success.
